Dean Ornish, MD:  The book puts forth an important new and unifying theory. We tend to think of chronic diseases as being fundamentally different from each other. Heart disease is different than diabetes or prostate cancer or Alzheimer’s. But they’re really the same disease manifesting in different forms because they all share the same underlying biological mechanisms, things like chronic inflammation, oxidative stress, changes in the microbiome, telomeres, gene expression and so on. In turn, each one of these mechanisms is directly influenced by what we eat, how we respond to stress, how much exercise we get, and how much love and support we have. That’s what you found in the blue zones as well.

This book is the culmination of 40 years of work we’ve done showing what a powerful difference diet and lifestyle can make. Blue Zones shows what a powerful difference diet and lifestyle makes in preventing disease. The field of Lifestyle Medicine, which I helped create, actually treats and even reverses chronic disease with diet and lifestyle changes.

D Buettner: You’re investigating this new theory in your research?

D Ornish: This theory provides a more scientific basis for understanding disease and helps explain why blue zones regions and some Asian countries have had low rates of all these different chronic diseases. Yet you see that when they start to live and eat like us, the rate of these chronic diseases goes up very quickly because they’re activating those same mechanisms that we are in this country.

The radical underlying theory is that for the vast majority of chronic diseases in our 40 years of research, we didn’t find that it was one set of lifestyle changes for reversing heart disease and a different diet and lifestyle program for diabetes or prostate cancer. It was the same lifestyle changes for all of them.

How Big Pharma Benefits From Our Industrial Food Diet | By Suzanne Burdick, Ph.D. | ChildrensHealthDefense.org

Skyrocketing rates of obesity and diabetes in the U.S. raise questions about what we’re eating, whether today’s food acts more like a drug and how Big Pharma benefits from our industrial food diet, according to investigative podcaster James Li.

In an episode of Breaking Points “51-49 with James Li,” Li asked:

“Is there something about nutrition — the food that we are eating — that is severely impacting our health and causing us to be fatter and sicker than we’ve ever been in history?”

Li discussed research conducted by Denis Burkitt, an Irish surgeon (1911-1993) who — by studying the differences in the feces and overall health of people in Africa compared with people in Europe and North America — hypothesized that people in high-income countries generally have “severely fiber-deficient diets” and related health problems mainly due to the over-processing of natural foods in those regions.

Since Burkitt’s death in 1993, Li said, Burkitt’s hypothesis has been verified and extended by large-scale epidemiological studies showing that fiber deficiency increases the risk of colon, liver and breast cancer and increases all cancer mortality and death from diabetes, cardiovascular, infectious and respiratory diseases, and all non-cardiovascular, non-cancer causes.

“We sure have talked an awful lot about science over the past several years,” Li said. “This, however, is probably some of the most fascinating research I’ve come across.”

“But for some reason,” he added, “it gets almost no coverage and we have to wonder — why?”

Li pointed out that grains — such as rice and wheat — naturally have fiber in them, but this fiber is typically removed by industrial food companies when they process the grains to make consumer products.

“It’s profitable to sell food that is fatty and sugary and salty and addictive,” Li said, adding that it’s “much less profitable to sell food that is wholesome — high in fiber — and minimally processed.”

He added:

“Is it not extremely frustrating that so many solvable problems in our society stem from the fact that solving that problem would necessarily disrupt a very profitable financial scheme?”

Milton Mills, MD practices urgent care medicine in the Washington DC area, and has served previously as Associate Director of Preventive Medicine and as a member of the National Advisory Board, for Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM). He has been a major contributor to position papers presented by PCRM to the United States Department of Agriculture regarding Dietary Guidelines for Americans, and has been the lead plaintiff in PCRM’s class action lawsuit that asks for warning labels on milk. Dr. Mills earned his medical degree at Stanford University School of Medicine, and completed an Internal Medicine residency at Georgetown University Hospital. He has published several research journal articles dealing with racial bias in federal nutrition policy. He frequently donates his time via practicing at free medical clinics, and travels widely, speaking at hospitals, churches and community centers throughout the country.
